Bio Paul Handy has written 11 plays that have been performed by community theatre groups and in other venues. He was born on August 21, 1958, and grew up in Baltimore and in the Washington, D.C., area. Paul has a Bachelor of Arts from Rutgers University - Livingston College, with majors in Labor Studies and Sociology in 1981. He has a Juris Doctor from the University of Baltimore School of Law in 1986. He has been an attorney for many years and an administrative law judge since 1998. The first play Paul wrote, "They're Tearing Down the Old Country Hospital," with Dan Young, was performed in 1980. Paul then wrote a romantic comedy called, "The Arrangement," produced at Livingston College in 1981 and at Montgomery Playhouse in 1988. Many of Paul's plays have won awards at local competitions: "The Sound of a Tree Falling" won Best Play in Montgomery Playhouse's Black Box New Play Festival in 1994. In the Maryland Community Theatre Festival, "Satellite Parking" won two awards for its lead actress in 1997. "Suffering Fools" won three awards, including Best Original Script, in 2002. "Cry for the Gods," about the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy, won four awards in 2004, including Runner-Up Best Production. More recently, Paul has written plays for professional association events. "Merryman," a Civil War drama, has been performed in four venues: by the National Association of Administrative Law Judges in Baltimore in 2004, by the Maryland Bar Association in Ocean City, Maryland, in 2005, by the ABA in Chicago in 2006, and by the Arkansas Bar Association in 2006. "Full Truth," about Thurgood Marshall's struggle against segregation, has been performed at American University in 2007 and at the University of Baltimore School of Law in 2008. Other performances of several of Paul's plays are scheduled for later in 2008.
